Gregory Smaus is a Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH) by the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association (WSNLA). He holds an Associate’s degree in Science and Horticulture from Cabrillo College in central California. He comes from a long line of Gardeners and Landscape Architects. Prior to starting Native Root Designs in 2003, he worked professionally in the Horticulture field since 1998 practicing organic farming, native restoration, landscape design, retail nursery sales, irrigation, pond installation and maintenance, garden and landscape design/build and years of high quality garden maintenance. He has worked in a variety of settings, ranging from high-end retail sales to botanical garden internships, pruning organic orchards to installing whole residential irrigation and lighting systems and from designing and building native habitat gardens to installing formal patios and water features. Gregory draws on his extensive time in the wilderness to bring a simplicity and timelessness into his gardening, business and life.

Shannon: She loves her horses! She is a passionate gardener and organic farmer. Shannon creates beautiful basketry and natural furniture. As a former daycare owner, she can handle any task at hand with thoughtfulness and a determination to do it right. She has worked with Native Root Designs for over two years and keeps a strong pace throughout the garden and through the week. Her outstandingly positive perspective is contagious, as is her joyous laugh.
Community
Gregory lives in South East Seattle near Seward Park. In 2009, he helped organize the Rainier Valley Garden Tour in order to build on local support and inspire local community. Most of Native Root Designs marketing is done through community organizations, professional organizations and local businesses. Native Root Designs is a licensed and insured Washington state contractor and a member of the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association (WSNLA), the Envirostars program and the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild. As a five-star certified Envirostar landscape company, Native Root Designs was featured on the King County program Yard Talk.
